The title doesn’t lie, G.E has just released a breakthrough discovery that will allow to fit around 100 DVDs on a single compact disc. Currently, optical experts and industry analysts believe this idea has the potential of being a huge step in digital storage. The details are quite massive, but basically this genius idea was developed by the company’s holographic researchers in the field. The data is encoded within light patterns, stored in
light-sensitive material. These holograms act like microscopic mirrors
that refract light patterns when a laser shines on them, making each piece of recorded data retrievable and decipherable. Future prospects show a CD that can hold 500gb, 100x the size of a regular DVD, and 20x/10x (depending on type) the size of BluRay Discs. Predictions show that by 2011/2012, a public release of these DVDs will cost around 10 cents/gb, whereas currently a 25gb BluRay Disc costs around $1/gb. This invention could change a huge market in the world’s industry, helping our economy and spreading media, much, much more. I for one am psyched at the idea, and plan to buy hundreds of these amazingly affordable discs.
